Polka Dot Wedding Cake
There was a time, not too long ago, when wedding cakes all looked pretty much the same. This is not longer the case. With more bakers pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable when it comes to wedding cakes, couples today have far more options than did brides and grooms just a few decades ago.
One design that is rather unique is a polka dot wedding cake. A polka dot wedding cake can be either elegant or whimsical, depending on the overall design of the cake.
One bride had a very traditional looking tiered cake created and then had the sides of each tier adorned with polka dots in various colors. The result was a cake that was most assuredly a wedding cake, but with a fun and quirky twist.
Another bride had selected bridesmaid’s dresses on which the skirt had polka dots. She thought it would be neat to bring the polka dot theme to other parts of her wedding. While she wanted an elegant cake, she talked to her baker about a way in which she could have an elegant polka dot wedding cake.
The solution for this bride was to include polka dots made of fondant that was just a shade or two off from the color of the fondant that covered the rest of the cake.
This gave the bride her polka dots, but in a very subtle way.
Of course, not all brides care about such subtlety. Another bride had a very quirky cake designed. It included offset tiers in varying shapes and polka dots in three different colors. Her wedding topper was just as whimsical as the rest of her cake, and she even painted polka dots on the plastic bride.
Most bakers will be able to work with you to create the style of polka dot wedding cake that you want. While it is a rather unique design, such cakes are certainly not as unusual as they once were.
A polka dot wedding cake is also a good choice for brides who are trying to make their own cakes.
Rather than having to figure out how to complete complicated piping work (although some polka dot wedding cakes may include such work), all that is necessary to create a polka dot wedding cake is circular cookie cutters in various sizes.
Once the cake is arranged in tiers, simply cover the cake in frosting or, for a more finished look, fondant. Then, make fondant in the colors you have chosen for the dots.
Using the cookie cutter, create the dots in various sizes. Place a dab of buttercream icing, which will act like glue, on the back of each dot and place where desired on the cake.
A polka dot wedding cake can be fun or elegant and can be created by a bakery or made at home.
For brides who want something that is a bit different, but still would like to achieve the overall look of a more traditional cake, a polka dot wedding cake is a perfect choice.
